چکیده
This paper addresses two classes of different, yet interrelated optimization problems. The first class problems involves a mobile searcher that must locate hidden target in an environment consists set unbounded, concurrent rays. second pertains to the design interruptible algorithms by means schedule contract algorithms. Both types capture fundamental aspects resource allocation under uncertainty. We study several variants these families problems, such as searching and scheduling with probabilistic considerations, redundancy fault-tolerance issues, randomized strategies, trade-offs between performance preemptions. For many we present known results apply multi-ray multi-problem domains. Our objective is demonstrate well-motivated settings can be addressed using same underlying approach.

Multi-target Ray Searching Problems
We consider the problem of exploring m concurrent rays using a single searcher. The rays are disjoint with the exception of a single common point, and in each ray a potential target may be located. The objective is to design efficient search strategies for locating t targets (with t ≤ m). This setting generalizes the extensively studied ray search (or star search) problem, in which the searcher...
متن کاملContract Algorithms and Robots on Rays: Unifying Two Scheduling Problems
We study two apparently different, but formally similar, scheduling problems. The first problem involves contract algorithms, which can trade off run time for solution quality, as long as the amount of available run time is known in advance. The problem is to schedule contract algorithms to run on parallel processors, under the condition that an interruption can occur at any time, and upon inte...
متن کاملOptimal Scheduling of Contract Algorithms for Anytime Problems
A contract algorithm is an algorithm which is given, as part of the input, a specified amount of allowable computation time. The algorithm must then compute a solution within the alloted time. An interruptible algorithm, in contrast, can be interrupted at an arbitrary point in time and must produce a solution. It is known that contract algorithms can simulate interruptible algorithms using iter...
متن کاملFurther Galois Connections between Semimodules over Idempotent Semirings
In [14] a generalisation of Formal Concept Analysis was introduced with data mining applications in mind, K-Formal Concept Analysis, where incidences take values in certain kinds of semirings, instead of the standard Boolean carrier set. The construction leading to the pair of dually (order) isomorphic lattices can be further manipulated to obtain the three other types of Galois Connections pro...
متن کاملSearching Alternate Spaces to Solve Oversubscribed Scheduling Problems
Oversubscribed scheduling problems have been approached using both direct representations of the solution space and indirect, permutation-based representations (coupled with a schedule builder to produce the corresponding schedule). In some problem contexts, permutation-based search methods have been shown to outperform schedule-space search methods, while in others the opposite has been shown ...
